The Top Article of the Week

You have to market yourself if you want to make it in fitness. That's a fact. And it's not inherently a bad thing. After all, you need to make money, right?

But there is a disconnect in fitness between good products and good marketing -- and that gap is what Dick Talens exposes this week. For some of the biggest money makers in fitness & health, like Dr. Oz, Tracy Anderson, and Vani Hari, success didn't necessarily follow from expertise. People bought into their products, according to Dick, but "...it wasn't necessarily because their methods work. It's because they marketed their ass off. Those who rise to the top are simply those who are the best at selling their 'wisdom,' even if it's completely wrong."

Using several industry examples, Dick goes on to show just how marketing can trump expertise, even when it seems like real "science" is being used as evidence. Rather than simply expose the problem, however, Dick leaves us with actionable advice -- how to identify a snake oil peddler when we see one.
